Medical Device Manufacturer Wants Error-Free Product Distribution: Chooses Eagle Consulting and Development’s Automated Data Collection (ADC) Solution

KINNELON, N.J. - (BusinessWire) - (January 3, 2006)  Eagle Consulting and Development is pleased to announce that Massachusetts-based Insulet Corporation (www.insulet.com) chose Eagle’s RF Express™ for MFG/PRO product to meet its stringent product distribution requirements.

Insulet's first commercial product – the OmniPod™ Insulin Management System – represents a revolutionary approach to insulin delivery systems.  With its FDA clearance now in hand, the company has been ramping up for large-scale manufacturing and distribution. According to Kevin Schmid, VP of Manufacturing, “Projected demand for this product calls for us to manufacture and distribute hundreds of thousands of devices per month within two years. As we scale up to those levels, I don’t want to have to worry about business systems.  They must be in place first so we can concentrate on the product.”

Facing that steep growth curve, manufacturing wanted an enterprise system with proven ability to handle high-volume, continuous, disposable manufacturing in an FDA-regulated environment.  MFG/PRO from QAD met the requirements and implementation began.

Insulet quickly realized that they could leverage QAD MFG/PRO’s capabilities by adding an accurate, real-time ADC solution, but the standards for a medical device company are very high.  Eagle’s RF Express for MFG/PRO brought to the table its tight integration with the enterprise system, its real-time approach to data collection and Eagle’s excellent track record for successful implementations and superior support in an FDA-regulated environment.

According to Schmid, “I’m not willing to tolerate transaction errors. That meant we needed to mistake-proof the distribution process. Eagle’s system enabled us to accurately capture extremely small bar codes (barely readable with the human eye) on vendor-supplied parts during the actual build of an Insulet device.  There are no second chances and there’s no room for error since the individual parts can no longer be scanned once they are incorporated into a larger assembly.  In addition to scanning the components, Eagle protects those serial numbers from being reused, and ties those serial numbers into the finished device as well as the final packaging.”

Insulet’s long-range plans also include international distribution, making Eagle’s global footprint an important consideration as well.
